This is how the Windham’s Helping Hands “Back to School” program began

Twenty-one years ago, Windham’s Helping Hands began with one simple, generous question. Ruth-Anne Calandra, a Windham resident, walked into Golden Brook School and asked what she could purchase to help the children who didn’t get to experience the excitement of receiving new back-to-school items.

She had seen firsthand how a few new outfits, shoes, or notebooks gave her own children confidence and joy as they began the school year. Ruth-Anne wanted to make sure every child in Windham had that same opportunity.

From that thoughtful gesture, Windham’s Helping Hands “Back to School” program was born. Over the years, it has grown into something far beyond what Ruth-Anne ever imagined—an organization that now supports members of our community in so many meaningful ways, all year long.

If you’d like to learn more about how WHH continues to make a difference, we’d be happy to share.
